Santa Lucia Highlands
The Vineyards
Intrinity is the hedonistic blend of the finest eight barrels in the cellar – regardless of vineyard origin. It does, however, come entirely from vineyards located in the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation, most notably Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, Lucia Highlands Vineyard, and Kelly’s Vineyard.
The Vintage
The 2007 vintage would be most aptly described as the coolest and most even keeled in the past three decades. Temperatures from early May through the middle of August seldom broke the 80 ºF mark, delaying verasion and harvest substantially. By
late September we experienced two dustings of rain but the stage was already set for the potential of making phenomenal wines. Both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have now set new quality standards at Pessagno Winery as a result of the Vintage.
The Winemaking
The 2007 Intrinity was selected and blended in late June then allowed to “meld” for
several months prior to bottling. Our usual Burgundian winemaking practices were
employed such, as sur lee aging, weekly stirring, and no fining. It is our finest effort
in the art of Chardonnay winemaking.
Tasting Notes
This is a deeply concentrated wine with layers of apricot, citrus, dried banana, pineapple,
and toffee from new French oak aging. This wine is truly elegant with stylish
complexity and a viscous, round palate. Its two predecessors, the 2005 and 2006
Vintages garnered numerous Gold medals and 90+ scores.
Additional Notes
The word Intrinity was contrived by my third son Robert when he was only seven.
While conversing on the expansiveness of the universe and the pursuit of lofty personal
goals and aspirations, he told me that was like going to “Intrinity.” I asked him
to define what he believed “Intrinity” meant to him. His reply: “Going on and on
forever trying to reach a goal and not being able to get there.” It was a spoonerism of “Infinity” and “Eternity.” Intrinity will always be our highest winemaking pursuit.
